Let’s be real: anxiety can feel like it owns you. Like it runs your life, dictates your decisions, limits your joy. And if you're sober? Whoa. It can feel 100x louder.

When I first got sober in 2009, I had no idea how intense the anxiety would be. I thought quitting alcohol was the hard part. But suddenly I was sober, staring at the ceiling in a full-blown panic attack, wondering how the hell I was supposed to live like this.

And that’s why I want to start with this truth:

Anxiety is not forever.

We CAN overcome anxiety. Maybe not all of it—we’re always going to have a nervous system. But the kind that spirals you into a crying, shaking, breathless mess on the bathroom floor? That kind? Not forever.

The Loop That Traps Us

Here’s what most of us don’t realize: anxiety thrives in a loop. A thought sparks a feeling, that feeling sparks more anxious thoughts, which lead to more intense feelings—until you’re in a full-on spiral.

The way out? Interrupt the loop. Create a new thought-feeling pattern.

One of my favorite tools? A mantra:

May I be at peace.

Say it with your fingers. One word per finger. May I be at peace. Again. And again. This isn’t about spiritual fluff—it’s science. You’re creating a new neural path. You’re calming your system in real time.

My Story (AKA Proof We Can Change)

I used to wake up in anxiety attacks. I couldn’t meditate, couldn’t sit still, couldn’t function. In early sobriety, I was on the floor, hyperventilating in public bathrooms, shaking my hands to try to regulate. I felt like a fraud in meetings, at work, in life.

Eventually, I traveled the world looking for answers. I studied breathwork and meditation in India. I dove into neuroscience, trauma, somatic healing. I tested every technique on myself, over and over. And slowly, I rewired my system.

Now?

It’s been over a decade since I’ve had an anxiety attack. I overcame my public speaking phobia. My driving phobia. I lead groups, share my story on big stages, and even drive around Bali on the left side of the road (which would have sent me into a meltdown before).

It's Not Possible To Be "Broken."
