What Happens at 5 Years Sober

If you're approaching five years sober (or anywhere around 4 to 6 years), you might be wondering:

  • Why am I feeling so off?
  • What's up with all these emotions?
  • Why does it feel like I'm in a dark night of the soul?

You're not alone. There's something a lot of us go through at this stage in sobriety. It's not always talked about, but it should be.

This is your heads-up.

I'm not here to scare you.

I'm here to say: this happens for A LOT of us, even if it feels like everything is falling apart.

And yes, it can be a sign of transformation.

What AA Members Said About 5 Years Sober.

In recovery circles, you’ll hear phrases like:

  • “Don’t kill yourself in the first five years. You’ll be killing the wrong person.”
  • “Year five is when you get your feelings back.”
  • “There’s a boom at five—it’s the sound of your head coming out of your ass.”

Crude? A little. But accurate? Also yes.

Year five is often when buried pain resurfaces.

Old coping mechanisms don’t work anymore, and we’re forced to confront what’s underneath.

The hood pops open.

Why Year Five Years Sober Can Feel So Hard

By five years, most of us have put down the drink. We may even feel stable. But emotional sobriety? That’s a whole other beast.

Five years into sobriety, we’re often hit with:

  • A dark night of the soul
  • Identity crisis ("Who the hell am I now?")
  • Resurfacing trauma or grief
  • Deep self-rejection that’s no longer tolerable
  • A need for radical change (in relationships, career, purpose)

This isn’t a relapse—it’s a rebirth.

But it feels like a breakdown.

5 Things That Happen At 5 Years Sober:

  • The Hood Pops Open: You finally access buried emotional pain you didn’t even know was there. The protective layers fall away. For many, this is when childhood trauma, abuse, or deep grief comes into full view. It’s raw—but it’s also an invitation to heal.
  • The Dark Night of the Soul: You might feel lost, disconnected from your higher power, your higher self or even question your entire identity. You’re between the old you and the new you. It’s not comfortable—but it’s transformative.
  • No More Self-Rejection: We realize how often we’ve abandoned ourselves. People-pleasing. Overworking. Using food, screens, or relationships to avoid feelings. The shift? A radical commitment to stop betraying yourself. This is the moment you choose YOU.
  • The Way Out Is Through: There’s no bypassing the pain. We have to feel it to heal it. Conscious grieving and presence—not numbing—become the path to freedom. (And it works. Presence is love.)
  • Grieve Your Losses: Most of us haven’t properly mourned what we lost—our childhood, our dignity, our years spent in addiction. This isn’t self-pity; this is sacred release. When we name the loss, we can finally bury the pain properly.

What Might Be Blocking You.

Even at five years sober, we can feel stuck because of:

  • Secondary addictions (scrolling, food, chaos)
  • Fear of feeling our feelings
  • Dysfunctional relationships
  • Low standards we’ve settled for
  • Repressed trauma we haven’t addressed

This isn’t a sign of failure. It’s a signal that we’re ready for more.

Deeper healing.
Radical honesty.
Real freedom.

There IS A Way Through.

If this feels like your life right now—if the pain is rising, your old tools aren’t cutting it, and you know you’re meant for more…

This is exactly why I created Rocket Your Recovery.

It’s the course I wish existed when I hit my emotional bottom at 5.5 years sober.

Because here’s the truth: we don’t talk enough about what happens after we “get stable.”

About the shame, trauma, doubt, and cross-addictions that come roaring back—not because we’re failing, but because we’re ready to rise.

Rocket guides you through everything I had to learn the hard way:

  • How to stop betraying yourself and embrace radical self-empowerment.
  • How to feel your feelings without being consumed by them
  • How to heal the shame that still whispers “you’re not enough”
  • How to stop hiding and start living your purpose
  • How to speak your truth and share your story

If your spirit is waking up and your past is catching up, Rocket is a roadmap for what comes next.

Because the breakdown at 5 years might just be the breakthrough that changes everything.
