Self Gaslighting And Trusting Your Intuition

The Bestie Messages/Emotional Sobriety/Self Gaslighting And Trusting Your Intuition

How to Stop Self-Gaslighting and Start Trusting Your Intuition (Even in Early Sobriety)

You know that inner nudge? That whisper in your gut? That subtle this-isn't-right feeling?

Yeah—your intuition.

But when you’re used to doubting yourself, when the culture or people around you have repeatedly told you not to trust your instincts, it can be really freaking hard to listen to that inner voice. Especially in early sobriety, when your whole system is thawing out.

Let’s talk about how to stop self-gaslighting, start validating yourself, and rebuild the trust that leads to intuitive power.

What Is Self-Gaslighting?

Self-gaslighting is that voice inside saying:

  • “Maybe I’m overreacting.”
  • “I don’t know what I’m talking about.”
  • “I must be wrong, again.”

It’s second-guessing your gut instinct, dismissing your truth, and defaulting to others’ opinions over your own inner knowing.

For many of us, this pattern was learned. Maybe we were gaslit in childhood. Or maybe society trained us to invalidate our inner compass. Either way, it's a habit—and habits can be unlearned.

Sobriety is the perfect time to do that.

Rebuilding Intuition in Sobriety

Early sobriety is about more than quitting alcohol—it’s about rebuilding you.

When we stop drinking, our interoception (our ability to feel what’s happening inside our body) starts to repair. That means your gut feelings get clearer, louder, and easier to hear.

But in the meantime, it’s a practice. A few that helped me:

  • Journaling to get thoughts out of my head and onto paper.
  • Reading my own writing back with fresh eyes (like, wow, my truth is right there).
  • Meditation and embodiment—just sitting quietly and noticing how something feels in my body.

The more we tune in, the better we get at it, and the more we learn to trust what we feel.

Write it. Affirm it. Believe it.

In early sobriety, my therapist had me write this down:

  • Trust your gut. No matter what. That’s where God lives.

I taped it to my bathroom mirror. Read it every day.

That belief changed my life.

Now, I obey my intuition. If my gut says yes, it’s yes. If it says no, it’s no. No committee required.

Intuition vs. Fear: How to Tell the Difference

Still unsure whether it’s fear or intuition? Try this:

  • Write it down. All of it.
  • Read it back. Out loud or to a friend.
  • Notice what your body says. Do you feel tense? Calm? Clear?

Our truth usually lives in our body, not our overthinking brain.

And if you’re still spinning? Take a breath. The right choice feels grounded, even if it’s scary.

A Body-Based Practice to Build Trust

Want to rebuild your interoception (aka your inner compass)?

Here’s how:

  • Sit or lie down.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Ask: What sensations do I feel inside my body right now?
  • Just notice. No judgment.

This is emotional mastery. Nervous system regulation. And yes—this is also how you start trusting your intuition again. We go deep on this inside my course Liberated in Sober Skin, peep the details by clicking here.

Your Beliefs Shape Your Reality.

Beliefs are seeds. And you can choose which ones to water.

If you want to trust your gut, start by believing you can trust your gut.

Then prove it to yourself. Take that small intuitive action. See what happens. Keep practicing.

Eventually, you’ll build a body of evidence that your gut was right all along.

You Deserve to Trust Yourself.

If you’ve been doubting your truth for years—you’re not broken.

You’re just ready to evolve.

Let’s recap:

  • Self-gaslighting is a learned pattern—and it ends now.
  • Your intuition is real, valid, and rebuilding every day you stay sober.
  • Meditation, journaling, and mindful embodiment help strengthen that inner voice.
  • You can write your new belief: “I trust my gut. No matter what.”

You are the expert on your body. Your life. Your next step.

And when you follow that internal yes? Life unfolds in ways you never could’ve imagined.
