Relapse Prevention in a Sentence

The Bestie Messages/Early Sobriety/Relapse Prevention in a Sentence

Relapse Prevention Breakthrough

There was a sentence someone said to me in early sobriety that literally changed everything.

It cracked open a whole new way of living that I didn’t even know was possible. I was somewhere between 30 and 90 days sober, newly out of rehab, and making my first sober friends.

I was still shaky. Raw. Trying to hold it together one day at a time.

She looked at me and said:

"You never have to drink again."

At the time, that sentence felt wild.

I had never even considered that before. I had always had to drink.

It was my coping skill, my relief, my go-to when life got overwhelming—which was often. Good days, bad days, breakups, celebrations, Tuesdays... everything came with a drink.

Drinking felt like the only way I could tolerate being in my body.

So hearing that sentence? "You never have to drink again." It was like my brain exploded.

I didn’t have to?

Why We Reach for a Drink
(Even When We Don’t Want To)

Let me break it down real simple:

Addiction, for me, was compulsively not wanting to feel.

Good emotions. Bad emotions. Anxiety. Loneliness. Fear.

I didn’t want to feel any of it.

I was just trying to escape discomfort.

And in early sobriety, that discomfort felt so loud.

I felt like my skin didn’t fit. I was anxious AF and completely unsure how to survive life without alcohol.

That’s why I was at risk for relapse.

I didn’t know how to be this anxious and not drink.

So it became my #1 mission to figure out how to feel comfortable in my skin without alcohol.

Because alcohol had almost killed me. So it felt like my survival depended upon it.

The One Day At a Time Mindset
(It Actually Works)

That sentence, "You never have to drink again," was powerful, but let’s be real: it can be overwhelming.

If you’re just trying to survive today, the idea of never drinking again might feel impossible.

So instead, I clung to the classic (and often cringey) but actually helpful phrase:

Just for today.

  • Just for today, I won’t drink.
  • Just for this hour, I’ll stay sober.
  • Just for this moment, I’ll reach for support instead of a drink.

Break it all the way down into bite-sized moments. That’s how we build a new life.

How To Not Drink When It Feels Hard

When that old impulse flares up, here's what helped me stay sober and could help you too:

  • Pause. Create space between the feeling and the drink. Just pause.
  • Move. Do jumping jacks. Go outside. Shake your body. Put activity between you and the impulse.
  • Reach out. Call or text a sober friend. You don’t need to be profound. Just say: "I'm freaking out. Can you talk?"
  • Get curious. Ask: What am I feeling right now that I want to escape?
  • Redirect. Do something kind for yourself: a shower, a snack, a meditation, journaling, breathwork.

Even these tiny actions start to rewire your brain.

Seriously.

Every time you choose sobriety instead of alcohol, you’re trailblazing new neural pathways.

Eventually, that new pathway becomes your default highway.

It gets easier.

But in the beginning? You just keep doing the next right thing.

Impulse Control is a Skill You Can Rebuild.

Here’s something powerful: Alcohol messes with your brain’s ability to regulate impulses.

Alcohol impacts your executive function.

That means your ability to hit pause and choose differently can feel completely hijacked in early sobriety.

But the longer you stay sober, the more your brain starts to heal.

Impulse control comes back.

You get stronger.

And you get to keep stacking those sober days until you don’t even think about drinking anymore.

I Literally Don’t Think About Drinking Anymore.

It’s wild to even say this, but I haven’t had the thought to drink in YEARS.

The last time I had even a flicker of an idea that a drink might help, I was six or seven years sober. I saw a bottle of tequila in a cabinet and had a flash of that old thought. But it wasn’t even about wanting the drink. It was about not wanting to feel what I was feeling.

That was in 2016.

And even that moment passed quickly.

Now, drinking is not on my radar.

I’m not white-knuckling it. I’m living my life. But that didn’t happen overnight.

It happened one sober moment at a time.
